Walking route Assen

Discover the green heart of Assen on a walking tour that takes you past historic monuments, modern art and tranquil parks.
This walk starts at the Assen train station. From here you will walk to the Drents Museum. The museum contains a treasure trove of knowledge and inspiration, where visitors can explore the history and culture of Drente. Outside is a bronze statue of Bartje made in 1954. With his hands in his pockets, Bartje looks out over Assen's Market Square. It is based on the character Bartje Bartels from Anne de Vries' novel of the same name. Bartje has become a symbol of Drente and is an attraction for tourists. The route takes you further along the canal towards Deurze. You will pass the beautiful Deurzerdiep at the Poepenhemeltje. This is a place where remains of an old entrenchment may lie or where once a garden house of the Vredeveld estate may have stood. This cannot be said with certainty. But it is definitely worth a visit. Through the Sterren Bos you walk around Assen back to the starting point.
